Narrative of Justification

The powers and duties of the President are set forth in the Board of Trustees By-Laws of Bennett College and the Job Description of the President.  As stated in the Board of Trustees By-Laws 2005, Article V (Powers and Duties of the President of the College):

“The President of the College shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the College and the Official Adviser to and Executive Agent of the Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee. As educational and administrative head of the College, the President shall exercise a general superintendence over all the affairs of the institution and bring such matters to the attention of the Board as are appropriate to keep the Board fully informed to meet its policy-making responsibilities. The President shall have power, on behalf of the Trustees, to perform all acts and execute all documents to make effective the actions of the Board or its Executive Committee. Except as otherwise provided in these bylaws, the President shall be ex-officio a member of all committees of the Board with power to vote.”

Currently, the college has only one sport.  The sport is basketball and is headed by a coach and a staff of assistants.  The coach reports directly to the President’s office through the Chief of Staff.  In summary, the President is involved and has the authority and final responsibility for personnel selection and hiring of the head coach, and assistants.

The President exercises appropriate administrative and fiscal control over the institution’s intercollegiate athletic program.  Working with the Chief of Staff, the Vice President for Business and Finance, and the Provost, the President exercises administrative and fiscal controls through processes and systems of the intercollegiate program.

The annual budget for athletics is approved by the Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the President.  The budget is recommended to the President through the Vice-President for Business and Finance on the recommendation of the Chief of Staff.  All requisitions and budgets for athletics are approved by the President’s Office.
