Narrative of Justification

The Bennett College Board of Trustees approved an Intellectual Property Policy on February 15, 2008. (See Board Minutes).  The policy is clear concerning ownership of materials, compensation, copyright issues, and the use of revenue derived from the creation and production of all intellectual property.  Further, the policy governs the activities of all students, faculty, and staff.  The policy defines different categories of intellectual property, details the terms under which Bennett claims copyright and/or share of royalty income, and specifies the division of such income among the faculty/staff and/or students responsible for developing it, the department, unit, the college and other interested parties.

In addition to the Intellectual Property Policy, the Faculty Handbook, pp. 95-96 specifically details the ownership of classroom materials produced by faculty.  (Intellectual Property Policy).  Recognizing the joint contributions of faculty expertise and college resources in the development of classroom syllabi, handbooks, and manuals (including laboratory instructions) for college classes, each party retains the right to the continuing use of such material in the event that a faculty member who has developed such material leaves the College.

The Intellectual Property Policy is published in the policy manuals located in administrative and academic offices of the college.
