Narrative of Justification

Bennett College uses the semester credit hour as the unit of credit. A semester encompasses 15 weeks. Three-credit courses offered on Monday/Wednesday/Friday serve as the standard. These courses meet for 55 minutes for each of a minimum of 41 class sessions in the semester. Courses that meet on a Tuesday/Thursday schedule are extended to 75 minutes per session to ensure the appropriate amount of contact hours.

A course is deemed comparable to a course offered for academic credit at the College if either (a) the course is similar to a course presently offered for academic credit at the College, or (b) it is not similar to an existing course, but is recommended for credit by an existing academic program or department at the College. Thus, it is not necessary that a course exactly match or be similar to a course offered at the College in order to be granted transfer credit. Equivalent credit is granted for courses satisfying condition (a). Elective transfer credit is granted for courses satisfying condition (b). For institutions on the quarter system, two-thirds of the credits will be transferred to the College. Courses given equivalent status may be used to satisfy proficiency, minor, major, or if three or more credits, GER requirements. Courses granted elective transfer credit will count toward the total number of academic credits required for the baccalaureate degree.

See the response to Core Requirement 2.7.4 and Comprehensive Standard 3.4.4 for a complete description of policies governing transfer of credits.

The College follows the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) guidelines.
