Bennett College publishes policies on the responsibility and authority of faculty in academic and governance matters and is in compliance with 3.7.5 Faculty Governance. The primary method of publication is the Faculty Handbook, pp. 54-56.
The Faculty Handbook, Article Two: Functions contains s description of faculty responsibility and authority in academic and governance matters. It states that there are certain specific areas in which the faculty has primary responsibility. These specific areas include educational programs and curricula, subject matter and methods of instruction, aspects of student life which relate to the educational process, research, and eligibility for faculty development programs and selection procedures for faculty status.
Faculty authority in academic matters is one aspect of faculty governance. Authority over educational programs and curricula is a prime example of this authority. All changes in educational programs and curricula go to the Curriculum Committee, then to the Faculty Senate, and finally to the full faculty for approval (Faculty Handbook, Article Three: 3.5 p. 15). In addition to recommendations from the Curriculum Committee, the Faculty Senate receives action items from standing and ad hoc committees of the faculty. It then sends them with its own recommendations to monthly meetings of the Faculty (Faculty Meeting Minutes).
The Divisions and Departments also have meetings devoted to academic and governance issues relevant to educational programs and curricula. Major policies involving these units are established and recommended at their meetings (i.e. Division Meeting Minutes, Feb. 13, 2006 and Sept. 14, 2004).
