FAQs
What is
Womanist Religious Studies?
WRS is the institutionalization of womanist
religious scholarship on the undergraduate level.
This has been done on a graduate level as black
women specialize in womanist religious scholarship
in their doctoral work. Several years ago, Layli
Phillips spearheaded a post-doctoral program and
newsletter in womanist studies at the University of
Georgia -- including, but not limited to the study
of religion. Currently, Jacquelyn Grant leads a
post-doctoral program in womanist religious studies
at the Interdenominational Theological Center in
Atlanta, GA. Bennett’s Program is the first
womanist religious studies program on the
undergraduate level.
How is
this similar to or different from a traditional
religious studies program?
Like other religious studies programs, WRS offers a
breadth of learning in the academic study of
religion covering topics such as biblical studies,
ethics, theology & philosophy and religious
history. A graduate of the program will be prepared
for graduate study, should she choose. On the other
hand, WRS is intentionally attentive to the
cultural, symbolic, and ritual diversity throughout
the religious lives of African American women.
Can I
major in Womanist Religious Studies?
Not yet, but soon! You will also be able to dual
major and minor in WRS.
I can’t
attend the lecture or summit? Is a recording
available?
Yes – lectures and summit presentations are recorded
and available for purchase on DVD and VHS. Contact
us for more information.
