The Virginia- North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (VA-NC LSAMP) at Bennett College for Women
Initiated in 2007, with support from the National Science Foundation, the VA-NC LSAMP Project is dedicated to increasing the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented minority groups that pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Alliance, led by the University of Virginia, encourages these individuals to earn baccalaureate degrees and pursue a graduate education preferably in one of the eight partner-institutions from Virginia and North Carolina.
BEING A LSAMP SCHOLAR
LSAMP Scholars at Bennett are truly ladies of distinction. First and foremost, an LSAMP Scholar must be a STEM Major (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math/Computer Science). Beyond meeting this basic qualification, scholars must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better, participate in at least 80% of LSAMP sponsored activities, and demonstrate strong leadership skills. Upon completing an application, prospective scholars are then interviewed. Selected LSAMP Scholars are mentored by faculty and are expected to participate in at least one summer research opportunity at one of our partner institutions/or other available sites.
LSAMP scholars receive a stipend (per semester) and are able to participate in a variety of enrichment and support activities offered to STEM majors through the Center for Math/Science Success at the Division of Natural & Behavioral Sciences and Mathematics. One particular service that LSAMP provides is tutoring. LSAMP offers tutoring in what we deem the “gate keeper” courses at Bennett-Biology/Zoology, Math (various), Organic & General Chemistry. We want to ensure that our LSAMP Scholars, as well as their fellow Bennett Belles maintain the highest standard of academic excellence.
Upon graduation, LSAMP scholars will be eligible to apply for graduate school support through the LSAMP “Bridge to Doctorate Program” where they receive full tuition support and a stipend of $30,000 per year from the National Science Foundation (for the first two years of graduate study).
