The mission of Academic Affairs
is to facilitate students’ efforts to increase their knowledge and
develop skills necessary for life-long learning in the contemporary
technological global community, thus enabling them to become global
women leaders. Through a search for truth, the discovery and sharing of
knowledge, the development of leadership skills, service to others,
presentation of quality educational programs — created by responsible
faculty, staff and administrators — students will be well prepared for
intellectual, ethical, and career challenges.
The
appointment to serve Bennett College for Women as its new Provost is an
honor beyond measure. Having attended a liberal arts college for women
for my own undergraduate education, I value the unique ability such
institutions have to nurture the intellectual, social, and spiritual
lives of their students. Now, after over 25 years in higher education
as a scholar, faculty member, and academic leader, I am particularly
excited about the opportunity to serve at a liberal arts college that
has such a rich legacy of educating African American women.
Drawing on my previous leadership
roles in the academy, the community, and the church, I look forward to
this new opportunity both to serve and to lead as we prepare a new
generation of women to become critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and
engaged citizens in our communities. I am convinced that Bennett
College is well-positioned to continue its move from good to great like
never before in its history. As we educate, celebrate and empower women
to transform their lives and take their place as contributors, leaders,
and 21st century global citizens, my commitment to the
President, the Board of Trustees, alumnae, faculty, administrators,
staff, and students and their families is to provide leadership that
fosters excellence in every area of academic affairs, that supports the
mission of the College, and that helps to bring Bennett College for
Women to even greater levels of distinction in higher education. I
count it a blessing to join the Bennett College family as it begins its
new season of greatness, and I look forward to the work we will all do
together.
