On Thursday, June 15, Bennett College officials hope to raise a minimum of $10,000 in conjunction with the Tom Joyner Foundation.
And they’re counting on the kindness of donors just like you to make it happen!
Bennett has partnered with the Tom Joyner Foundation for Bennett Belles Day, an entire 24-hour cycle in which the emphasis will be on making donations to Bennett, one of only two all-female HBCUs in the country.
Being billed as a “Worldwide Day of Giving,” the online fundraising event will support Bennett’s designation as School of the Month with the Tom Joyner Foundation. All money raised will support student scholarships at Bennett, where the top five majors are biology, psychology, business administration, social work and journalism and media studies.
Giving is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and continue until midnight.
“We’re excited about Bennett Belles Day and are grateful to the Tom Joyner Foundation officials for selecting us as one of the June schools of the month,” said Bennett Interim President Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins. “We have hundreds of deserving students here at Bennett who are in need of scholarship dollars to continue their education, and this day of giving is an excellent and expeditious way to provide funds for them.
“I know this time of the year people are taking family vacations and spending money on summer camps for their children, but I also know Bennett College is an outstanding institution that is worthy of a little help from the community,” Dawkins continued. “I cannot wait until just after midnight on Wednesday to text my pledge to Bennett, and I hope hundreds of people will join me by texting their pledge, going online to make it or dropping a check in the mail.”
Dawkins said she’s confident Bennett’s alumnae will step up to the plate on Thursday’s Worldwide Day of Giving – just as they always do. In 2015, an article in U.S. News & World Report cited Bennett’s alumnae with the second highest percentage of giving among HBCUs – behind Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. – for a two-year period. Bennett’s alumnae continue to be the institution’s largest donor block.
“I know we can count on our alumnae on Thursday,” Dawkins said. “I just hope others will follow their lead and dig deep for Bennett.”
Bennett College has also received other favorable rankings from U.S. News & World Report. Last September, the magazine ranked Bennett 9th among the “Best Regional Colleges in the South.” And Bennett was recognized by College Choice in 2016 as one of the top Women’s Colleges in America.
