The Division
of Humanities has a strong commitment to the study
and appreciation of human expression and creativity;
to the promotion of honesty, integrity, and
scholarship; to excellence in holistic instruction
and rigorous academic standards. The faculty members
of the Division are united in the endeavor to mentor
students as critical thinkers and participating
citizens in pursuit of truth, beauty, spirituality,
social justice, and global leadership and to nurture
scholars who value human expression and behaviors,
are prepared to be competitive candidates in
graduate and professional schools and their chosen
careers, and are leaders with skills based upon
humanistic values.
The Division
of Humanities strives to develop degree programs
whose graduates may choose among the most
prestigious graduate and professional schools and
careers. To this end, we will (1) recruit students
who value excellence and intend to achieve
excellence in their fields and faculty members who
practice and model excellence; (2) maintain high
academic standards for our students and expectations
of significant scholarship and effective teaching
from our faculty; and (3) ensure that our students
are exposed to a rich variety of cultural,
intellectual, and professional experiences.

Three
cross-disciplinary programs are included within the
Division:
Africana Women’s Studies
Global Studies
Womanist Religious Studies
Courses in all three Programs are open to all
students as electives. In addition, a Certificate
and a Minor are offered in Global Studies. Students
may concentrate and major in Africana Women’s
Studies or Womanist Religious Studies through
Interdisciplinary Studies.
The three cross-disciplinary programs also provide
activities for students and faculty members,
including an International Week Program,
opportunities for travel abroad, lectures from
renowned scholars, and an annual Africana Women’s
Studies/Womanist Religious Studies Summit.
