History,
Philosophy and Religion/Interdisciplinary Studies
The
department is committed to providing a holistic
approach to the understanding of human civilization.
We see our mission as extending this understanding
to both traditional students and mature returning
students for the purpose of strengthening their
opportunities and quality of life through exposure
to ever improved curricular offerings. The
department will work to enhance Bennett’s service to
the entire college and community by involving
students, who have accepted the department’s
commitment to the valuing of Africana and Women’s
Studies perspectives in public forums, community
service, and intercollegiate educational events.
The Vision
of the Department of History, Philosophy and
Religion /Interdisciplinary Studies is to foster
global understanding and appreciation of diversity
among all of the students the department serves, and
especially among student majors within the
department. We see the department as instrumental in
encouraging history-relevant study abroad
experiences that will enable students to live
effectively within the contexts they visit and that
will enable them to understand the philosophical and
religious implications of diverse cultures.
The History
Program at Bennett is designed to provide students
with a broad-based understanding of the various
forces that have shaped modern society. This goal is
pursued through the offering of two General
Education History courses: HI 101/102:
Origins of Civilization; and either
HI 201/202: History of the United States
; or HI 203: African American History.
These courses carry three (3) credit hours (totaling
6 credit hours) and are required of all Bennett
students to graduate.
