What
is The New Academy?
Spring Term 2007 Schedule (PDF)

A college is and ought to be many
things. No matter whether she is a thirty-four year old
first-year student or a nineteen year old graduating
senior, Bennett Belles live and study in a community
that is itself intentionally a crossroads. Everywhere,
one finds students from nearly every State and many
countries and continents. Life-long friendships are
begun and earned. Careers and professional lives are
prepared for and launched. These opportunities shape the
lives of Bennett students.
But first and last, a college
truly worth its salt has for its most compelling
ambition a governing and undaunted objective: to provide
its students with diverse and lively opportunities to
become, in time, their own best teachers. For students
with career ambitions in law, medicine, graduate studies
in the humanities and sciences and social sciences, K-12
teaching, entrepreneurship, media, and global and public
service, The New Academy will have special appeal.
Established in January 2006 at the heart of Bennett
College for Women, The New Academy is designed to affirm
these public-minded and global-focused commitments. Its
curricular commitment is to engage Great Issues in the
Western Tradition of inquiry and action with the
experience of the African Diaspora. Steadfastly
rigorous, animated by exploration and discovery: that’s
the heart of the matter in The New Academy.

The Pioneer Cohort of Scholars,
Senior Fellows, and Collectors
Spring Term 2006
In Spring Term 2006, an intrepid group of Bennett Belles
became the Pioneers of The New Academy; an innovative
College-wide, interdisciplinary Learning Community at
Bennett College for Women. Together with, and under the
guidance of, a highly-motivated and talented crew of
Faculty (called Senior Fellows and Collectors), these
Belles began to chart a new chapter in Bennett’s
heralded record of student-focused teaching and
learning.
