Comments of Off-Site Review Committee

The college articulates student rights and responsibilities in a number of ways at the institution.  First, the college catalog has an overall section on Ethical Standards and a Code of Ethics.  This specifies minimum ethical standards for students in the following areas:  honest behavior and academic integrity; respect for personal rights, safety, and health of others; respect for personal property; refraining from alcohol and other drug use; being responsive to faculty/staff directives; and satisfaction of financial obligations to the college.  The Code of Ethics notes violation of ethical standards may result in disciplinary action as outlined in the Code of Conduct (non-academic matters) or the Honor Code.

The Honor Code is an oath that all students sign upon enrollment at the college noting their affirmation of the expectations of the institutional community.  A copy of this Honor Code is provided in the college catalog and student handbook (Bennett Belle Book 2007-08).  Both the catalog and student handbook are available on-line.  The student handbook is also disseminated to on-campus students (via residence hall staff) and off-campus students (via the Office of Student Affairs).  All students must sign for its receipt.  A sample of the sign-in sheet is provided in the supporting documentation.  The Bennett Belle Book is also distributed during New Student Orientation.

The institution notes that it has a process for handling cases of academic dishonesty via the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  However, Off-Site Committee was unable to locate a stated process for handling academic conduct issues in the college catalog, the Bennett Belle Book 2007-08, or on the current web site.  The Honor Code is present in these publications (catalog & Belle Book), however, it is not an actual procedural process for matters related to academic dishonesty.

Non-academic matters are administered by the Office of Student Affairs via the Code of Conduct.  The Bennett Belle Book 2007-08 presents a clear process to address non-academic conduct and offers students the ability to be advised of the specific charges, have the matter heard by a panel of faculty, students, and staff, as well as the option for an appeal.  A sample of a conduct letter and resolution in one matter was provided as supporting documentation.  A copy of the Code of Conduct is available on-line.

Bennett Focused Response

The College acknowledges that the process for handling academic conduct issues was not published in institutional publications.  However, there have been instances that prompted the institution to address matters of this nature.  A clear process is practiced and will now be published in the College Catalog.  This process was developed by the faculty and the Office of Academic Affairs and is as follows:

“Violations of Academic Integrity

The primary responsibility for academic integrity lies with individual students and faculty members of the college.  A violation of academic integrity is a breach of the Bennett College Honor Code, the Code of Conduct and the Code of Ethics.  Specific examples of academic dishonesty and potential sanctions are outlined in the Bennett Belle Book in the section covering the Honor Code and the Code of ConductExamples of sanctions are also listed in the catalog under the section covering the Bennett College Code of Ethics.

Alleged violations of academic integrity will be addressed by the faculty member with the student, in consultation with the department chair and/or the division chair.  Alleged violations may also be referred to the Office of the Provost for review and resolution.  In all cases, a student who is accused of a violation of academic integrity will be given notice of the alleged violation and an opportunity to be heard.”
