Comments of Off-Site Review Committee

The Department of Student Affairs consists of the following areas:  Career Services, Office of the Chaplain, Counseling Services, Health Services, Public Safety, Athletics and Recreation, Residence Life, Student Activities, and Academic Cultural Enrichment Series (ACES).  Student Affairs consists of sixteen professional staff members, seventeen public safety officers, and three administrative staff.  As per the job descriptions, all department heads are required to have a Master’s degree with 5-7 years of related experience.  The Vice President of Student Affairs, in consultation with the Director of Human Resources, may make exceptions and these exemptions are usually due to transferable professional experiences.  Four current directors, along with the Vice president, have advanced Master’s degrees.  While sample job descriptions are presented in the supporting documentation, the Off-Site Committee was unable to locate resumes of the personnel.  Such information is needed in order to evaluate the qualifications of the staff in relation to job descriptions.

Overall, Student Affairs appears to use a variety of strategies to ensure that its staff remains current and abreast in the profession.  It accomplished this goal through:  professional meetings and retreats throughout the year; involvement in college campus-wide committees; attendance at conferences and professional involvement in associations; and annual performance reviews.  Samples of presentations conducted at conferences as well as a performance evaluation were provided in the supporting documentation.
