Comments of Off-Site Review Committee

Helpful data were found in the Fact Book and in theAcademic Probation Reports.

Teacher Education is the single degree program at the college that entails licensure. The report shows the results of PRAXIS II scores based on students tested. Statistics over a five-year period include only 17 students. The State of NC requires that students pass PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II to receive a teaching license; however, the Off-Site Committee was unable to find any PRAXIS I data.  As part of its review, the On-Site Committee may wish to look at PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II exam licensure data for all students enrolled in the Teacher Education programs including Special Education, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, English Education, and Math Education.

The institution captures data on job placement. The Office of Career Services is responsible for collecting these data and reports them to the Office of Research & Effectiveness for internal and external reporting. According to the summary data in the Compliance Certification, job placement has significantly decreased over the past 5-years.

Course completion was discussed in the context of Satisfactory Academic Progress.  Graduation and retention rates were not addressed.  The institution’s case would be strengthened if these indicators of student achievement were included.

Bennett Focused Response

Bennett College does, in fact, evaluate student success using each of the listed measures in the standard.  Praxis I scores are maintained for each teacher education program.  In addition, the College calculates and publishes graduation and retention rates in its annual FactBook.  Please see the Praxis I and II Results (Praxis I Data 2002, Praxis I Data 2005-2006, Praxis II 2007-2008 Graduates) by program for teacher education and the FactBook 2007-2008, p. 15 for the graduation and retention rates of the College.
