On Nov. 6 as Bennett College freshwoman Karizmah Caldwell voted for the first time in her life, she couldn’t help but think of her maternal grandmother. Civil Rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Georgia) spoke inside the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel at Bennett College on Oct. 19. Lewis has been a member of Congress since 1987 and is the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation, which includes three-quarters of Atlanta. Lewis was in Greensboro to endorse Democratic candidate Kathy Manning, who is running for North Carolina’s 13th congressional district. Five Bennett College students met with former U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Oct. 9 at N.C. A&T State University. Holder had an interactive discussion with the students about local, national and global issues affecting their lives and encouraged them to vote. “Your future is at stake with this November election,” Holder said inside the Chancellor’s Dining Room in Williams Dining Hall. “This is a time for action, not despair.” Holder is considering a bid for the presidency in 2020. During Bennett College’s 145th Founder’s Day Convocation on Sept. 30, UNCF President/CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax said people should stop questioning the relevancy of HBCUs and instead celebrate them for their contributions to the fabric of American higher education.
