LISTEN TO THE PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT HERE!
Bennett College will hold our Founders’ Day Convocation on Sunday, October 16th at 11 am EST in Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel. On this day, we remember and pay tribute to those whose vision, wisdom, sacrifice, and support are the basis of our foundation.
We are pleased to welcome alumna Barbara Johnson ’77, author of A Head of Cabbage: A Memoir, as this year’s Founders’ Day Convocation Keynote Speaker. Ms. Johnson will share from her recently published memoir that chronicles the story of her life-threatening journey to receive a college education.
Her story, as documented in this debut work, won her first place in the Jacobs/Jones African-American Literary Contest and recognition from the Charlotte Writers’ Club in 2020.
At 18-years-old, Barbara’s father threatened to kill her if she went to school against his will. Lacking support from either of her parents, Barbara was forced to pursue her academic aspirations in secret.
Thanks to her unwavering conviction, she was eventually accepted to Bennett College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1977.
