For a group of Bennett College students, a week in the nation’s capital was an opportunity to connect with the people, institutions, and possibilities that could shape their lives after college.

Our Bennett Belles traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 55th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) as participants in Save A Girl, Save A World, a multigenerational mentoring organization founded by Glenda Gill. Through workshops, panel discussions and conversations with professionals, the Belles spent the week learning about leadership, careers and the paths available to young women preparing to enter the workforce.

The experience reflects a longstanding relationship between Bennett College and Save A Girl, Save A World, whose work centers on mentorship, leadership development, career and entrepreneurship exposure, financial literacy, and health and wellness. But some of the most meaningful moments happened outside the formal sessions. The students connected with representatives from IKEA, who surprised each participating HBCU student with a $100 IKEA gift card.

The Belles also met with Bennett College Acting President Dr. Ronald L. Carter and paused for a photograph with Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, a longtime member of the Bennett family who taught at the College for 40 years. Adams, who has remained a prominent advocate for historically Black colleges and universities, hosted a series of HBCU-focused events throughout the conference, bringing together students, presidents, advocates and supporters from across the country. Her connection to Bennett will continue on campus. On Sunday, October 11, at 2 p.m., Adams will return to Greensboro to deliver the keynote address at Bennett College’s Centennial Founders’ Day Convocation.

From workshops and new connections to conversations with leaders and potential employers, Belles made the most of their time at ALC 55, expanding their networks, exploring possibilities, and investing in their futures.
