World Water Day – The Importance of Drinking Water

Take a second to ask yourself: Did you drink enough water today?
There’s a good chance the answer is no, but if it’s yes, amazing!
Water is essential to life, and its presence, or absence, impacts our health and wellbeing. We often take water for granted, especially when it comes to consuming enough of it. Health experts recommend drinking approximately 2 liters/ half a gallon of water daily.
Here are some reasons to drink enough water every day:
- Improves digestionDrinking water can help to improve digestion by softening and breaking down food in the stomach, making it easier for the body to absorb nutrients. Water keeps the digestive system hydrated for efficient functioning.
- Lubricates your joints The Illinois Bone & Joint Institute states that water “helps to keep your joints lubricated and flexible; the Synovial fluid that directly lubricates your joints is made up primarily of water. This fluid reduces the friction between joints and helps to maintain healthy tissue and joints.”
- Regulates your body temperature Water regulates your body temperature by dissipating heat and cooling the body internally. This is essential for proper functioning of our organs.
- Keeps your skin moisturizedDrinking a good amount of water = hydrated skin. According to experts, people who drink large amounts of water are less likely to suffer from scars, wrinkles, and soft lines.
- Healthy heart, healthy mind Drinking water helps the heart pump blood and helps carry nutrients to your brain and assists with the functioning of cells. Water really is the body’s best friend!
Make sure you’re always carrying a bottle of fresh water with you throughout the day to stay hydrated! Set reminders if you need to; little habits make all the difference.
