At Bennett College, academic advising is a relationship between a Faculty Advisor and student, or Success Coach and student, with a shared responsibility between the advisor and the advisee. Each Academic Department and Program has a designated Faculty Advisor within the department and/or program, and Staff from the Office of Student Success serve as Success Coaches. Advising at Bennett College is an on-going, calculated, educational partnership, with a curriculum, instruction, and a set of learning outcomes.
During advising, the Faculty Advisor and Success Coach have the opportunity to exchange information designed to help students reach their educational and career goals. The students are responsible for knowing and following the institution’ requirements, determining their own directions and goals, and familiarizing themselves with the college’s current catalog. The Faculty Advisor and Success Coach help in explaining the College’s processes and requirements, works with the student to develop a plan to meet their academic goals, and connects the student with academic and student support services, which is invaluable in retaining and graduating students from Bennett College.
Undecided Majors and Bennett College Freshwomen must meet with their Success Coach for Academic Advising, and Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors work primarily with their Faculty Advisor. Transfer students are assigned a Faculty Advisor or Success Coach based on their classification. Even though Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are assigned a Faculty Advisor as their primary Academic Advisor, the Office of Student Success assists all students with academic advising concerns and inquiries.
