During an appearance on Good Morning America (GMA) on January 5, actress, creator, director, humanitarian, and honorary Bennett Belle, Erika Alexander, was celebrated for her Independent Spirit Award nomination for her role in “American Fiction,” and she took the opportunity to give a heartfelt shout-out to Bennett College!
Erika, an unwavering champion of Bennett College, was bestowed with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the 2023 commencement ceremony. During her GMA interview, Erika shared her deep appreciation for the institution that recognized her with such a prestigious honor — an honor previously bestowed upon iconic figures like Coretta Scott King, Barbara Bush, and Maya Angelou.
On GMA, Erika recounted her emotional experience at the graduation ceremony, saying, “There I was in the graduation, crying like a baby because I didn’t know how much it meant to me. I thank Bennett for that and also the great President Suzanne Walsh.” She added, “I didn’t get a chance to go to college straight out of high school. I kept acting and was discovered when I was 14.” She said receiving the honorary degree from Bennett College was “a big deal for my mother, who is all about academics and education.”
Belle Alexander, congratulations on the Independent Spirit Award nomination for your outstanding performance in “American Fiction.” Thank you for sharing your national spotlight with Bennett College as we continue to provide Black women and women of color with a rigorous education in an environment that uniquely supports their personal and professional success.
