Bennett College Student and Author Omeshia Bowens Empowers Readers with ‘I’m Still Rising’: A Captivating Journey of Healing through Poetry

Book launch scheduled for June 3, 2023 at Barnes & Noble, Greensboro, NC
While some students are enjoying the beginning of summer vacations, Bennett College student and emerging author Omeshia Bowens is planning her very first book launch. Omeshia, a sophomore social work major, has released her very first book entitled, “I’m Still Rising,” a collection of healing, empowering, and inspirational short poems. A book signing event will take place on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 1-5pm at Barnes and Noble bookstore, located at 3102 Northline Ave, Greensboro, NC 27408.
Omeshia Bowens is no stranger to overcoming challenges. She became pregnant with her first daughter at 15 years old. She uses her personal journey of being a teenage mother and overcoming many obstacles as inspiration, not only for her collection of heartfelt and transparent poems, but also for the 501(c)3 nonprofit, Still Rising Incorporated, that she founded and operates. The organization, which focuses on women’s empowerment and the prevention of teenage pregnancy, aims to provide information and resources to support women in achieving their goals.
In addition to being a student at Bennett and founder of a non-profit, Omeshia works for the Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services as a caseworker for the Adult Medicaid, Long-term Care, and Special Assistance programs. After graduating from Bennett College, she hopes to obtain master’s and doctorate degrees to become a Clinical Psychologist.
As a non-traditional student and the mother of three beautiful girls aged 23, 17, and 8, Omeshia says, “I want to help, encourage, and inspire as many women as possible within our community to reach their own goals in life.” The hardships she endured and the obstacles she was able to overcome, despite her circumstances, are what inspired her to start the nonprofit program. She adds, “Through my own story, I hope to inspire other women to never give up on their own dreams.”
Join Omeshia on June 3 to celebrate her book launch and to gain insight into her inspiring journey. Attendees will have the chance to meet the author in person and purchase a copy of “I’m Still Rising.”
