Message from the President: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Dear Bennett College Family,
As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I would like to thank the Zeta Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for recognizing me in an announcement about Breast Cancer Awareness. Likewise, I would be remiss if I did not thank all of you – Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumnae – for the prayers, well wishes and words of encouragement you extended to me as I underwent treatment for breast cancer. It was good to know that I had your support – including giving me advice on my hair, wigs and my eyebrows – throughout my ordeal. I also appreciate all of the hugs, particularly from students. I am extremely grateful to announce that my doctors have pronounced me as cancer free, although I still have to undergo radiation treatments.
I realize breast cancer – or cancer in general – has touched probably everyone on this campus in some way. I also know that some of the women on this campus are breast cancer survivors, and some were diagnosed with breast cancer this year just as I was. Please know I am thinking of you and praying that ultimately you will be cancer free as well. Ladies, it is important for you to continue getting regular mammograms and to be aware of any changes in your breasts. Early detection is key!
Again, thank you all so very much for your support.
Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, Ph.D.
President
