In an interview with Spectrum News 1’s Robert Wu, President Suzanne Elise Walsh, JD, of Bennett College reflects on her unforgettable encounter with President Jimmy Carter.
In 2017, while working at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, President Walsh met Mr. Carter backstage before a major event. He greeted her by saying, “You’re famous!”—a moment that exemplified his unique ability to genuinely connect with people and make them feel extraordinary.
President Walsh describes him as an authentic leader who was ahead of his time, championing energy conservation and inspiring impactful leadership through his humility and vision. “He made me feel fabulous in that moment,” she shared, emphasizing the lessons she learned from his kindness and authenticity.
President Walsh also describes him as “One of the loveliest human beings EVER.”
Alumna Carolyn Robertson Payton ’45 also had a connection to President Jimmy Carter
Carolyn Robertson Payton, Bennett College Class of 1945, made history as both the first African American and first female Director of the Peace Corps, appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977.
Payton’s leadership broke barriers and paved the way for Black women and people of color in international service. During her tenure, she fought for the Peace Corps’ independence, ensuring it remained a grassroots, apolitical agency—a legacy that continues to shape its mission today.
Alumna Payton’s contributions were foundational, with President Carter later signing an executive order ensuring the Peace Corps’ autonomy. She was also deeply committed to diversifying the Peace Corps, working tirelessly to attract more Black and Hispanic volunteers and inspiring young people to serve. Her work remains a powerful example of the importance of representation and inclusion.
