Regan Moore, Assistant Professor of Biology was invited to be a guest speaker in a Biology Webinar as part of a special issue on “Forces On and Within Cells” in the journal Molecular Biology of the Cell. “This is research that I completed while I was in graduate school at Duke University to better understand the organization of the structural components of the cell termed the cytoskeleton. I used microscopy and a developmental stage of Drosophila (fruit fly) development, termed dorsal closure. This process closely resembles dynamics during neural tube closure and palate closure.
Spina bifida and cleft lip/palate are some of the most common human congenital birth defects that arise when these processes are disrupted. By building a molecular understanding of dorsal closure we hope to learn more about how human development progresses and what goes wrong in these developmental disorders.”
