Philanthropist and entrepreneur Robert F. Smith is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners (Vista). He made headlines after his monumental donation of $34 million to eliminate the student loan debt of approximately 400 Morehouse College graduates in 2019. Because of his passion for helping students from communities that often lack access to opportunities, Smith knew that he wanted to do more for these students. This is what sparked the idea for Student Freedom Initiative (SFI).
As Chairman of SFI, Smith advocates for students to have equitable opportunities and works to break down racial barriers. SFI empowers students by providing them with the necessary resources to become successful in their careers and personal lives. These resources include specialized career programs, mentor counseling and access to internship opportunities, among other things.
Smith’s Early Years and Education
Smith’s appreciation for education and philanthropy began at a young age; he grew up in Denver, CO, and was raised by parents who were educators. They made it a priority to give back to the local community. Every month, regardless of the family’s financial circumstances, Smith’s mother would write a check to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Smith was also given the opportunity to attend a school outside his neighborhood, which provided him with experiences he might not have had otherwise. These aspects helped nurture his passion for education.
As a high school student, Smith applied for an internship at Bell Labs and was told the internship was only for college students. He continued to call every week until a spot opened up. That internship introduced him to his first mentor and helped expand his passion for engineering.
After graduating from high school, Smith attended Cornell University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. After obtaining this degree, he was able to land jobs at many notable companies, including Goodyear Tire and Rubber and Kraft General Foods. Smith’s passion for learning motivated him to continue his education at Columbia Business School, where he graduated with an MBA with honors in 1994.
Equipped with multiple degrees and a problem-solving mindset, Smith went on to work at Goldman Sachs, where he leveraged large deals in the finance industry. After some time there, Smith founded Vista in 2000, a leading global investment firm that invests exclusively in enterprise software, data and technology-enabled businesses. In 2023, Vista was recognized as the Global Technology Private Equity Firm of the Year by Private Equity International (PEI).
Smith’s Passion for Philanthropy
Smith’s philanthropic roots run deep, as he watched his parents give back to his beloved community throughout his childhood. That spirit of giving inspired him to give back as an adult. In the education sector, Smith recognized that some students face racial barriers to success and are not provided with equal access to learning opportunities.
In addition to his donations to SFI and Morehouse College, Smith also pledged support to his alma mater, Cornell University. He made donations totaling $30 million in 2016 to help fund the engineering school and scholarships for Black Americans and women. In 2022, Smith contributed an additional $15 million to Cornell University’s College of Engineering to establish several scholarship funds.
Aside from educational initiatives, Smith supports programs like Southern Communities Initiative (SCI), a catalytic program that works to accelerate racial equity in the six Southern communities where more than half of all Black Americans live. SCI partners with community leaders, companies and philanthropic organizations to implement local and sustainable measures to improve community resources. Smith also serves as Chairman of Carnegie Hall and an advisory board member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
